Context
A more coordinated approach of the various elements that create a safe operation is facilitated by the development of safety management systems (SMS) and their endorsement by international bodies and competent authorities in several safety critical industries.
SMS offers a cost-efficient opportunity to harmonise the diverging pressures faced by an organisation such as the need for higher asset utilisation, continuous cost overhead reductions and falling unit revenues while maintaining and improving safety performance.
It is the responsibility of the safety manager to ensure the implementation and running of SMS.
