Context 

A safety management system (SMS) is an integrated system designed to focus organisations on managing safety risks. SMS is designed to achieve improvements in safety performance through organisational learning. In order to work efficiently, SMS requires organisations to develop a safety culture.

SMS implementation is a gradual process of profound organisational change with several stages of maturity. This process needs to be actively managed. This training is specifically designed to train personnel in understanding the theory and building the practical skills to plan and implement an SMS.

• Regulatory framework governing SMS:
  • Regulatory basis across Part-ORO, Part-145, Part-CAMO, Part-ORA, Part-ADR.OR, Part-21, Part-ORGH, and Part-IS.
  • ICAO Annex 19.
  • ICAO Safety Management Manual (SMM).
• SMS concepts:
  • Regulatory framework governing SMS.
  • Basic safety concepts.
  • Introduction to safety management.
• Planning and implementing SMS:
  • Core elements of an SMS.
  • SMS pillars.
  • SMS organisational structures.
  • Milestones of SMS implementation.
• SMS methodologies, including exercises:
  • Safety risk management.
  • Bow-tie methodology.
  • Occurrence reporting system.
  • Safety audit and investigation report.
  • Safety performance indicators.

Training objectives 

• Familiarity with the requirements of SMS.
• Understanding of the scope and the  critical issues of SMS implementation.
• Ability to identify the critical areas that require attention for SMS  implementation.
• Ability to plan and implement the changes required in an organisation to successfully implement SMS.

• Duration: 3 days (18 hours).
• Deliverables: All participants will receive a certificate of attendance.
